In he r fieldwork with professional potters and painters of Greek vase replicas\ , she uses energetics to study the time management of potters and painters for basic shapes and to highlight incremental difficulty of different sur face treatments and decoration. In this new entrepreneurial-focused cont ext\, all products of Greek pottery workshops\, from the mundane ones to t he masterpieces\, are best understood as a convergence of skilled expertis e and savvy business management. Scaling up the individual timetables for each shape\, one can approach the broader topic of production capacity in more tangible terms and place the niche sector of figured ceramics within the wider ceramic sector on Ancient Greece. Sicily pos sesses some outstanding examples of this phenomenon\, in particular the gr eat villa of Casale near Piazza Armerina which\, 70 years after the main e xcavations\, is still unmatched anywhere in the Roman Empire for the sheer number of its figured and geometric mosaic floors. Less well known are th e villa at Caddeddi on the Tellaro river\, not far from Syracuse\, and tha t at Patti Marina on the north coast. This talk will not attempt to cover all aspects of these spectacular sites\, some of which will already be wel l known to those who have visited Sicily\, but will focus on recent work w hich has broadened our knowledge\, especially of the first two. It will al so present the speaker’s own recent excavations at a fourth site\, Gerac e\, near Enna in central Sicily\, which\, while not at the same level of l uxury as the other three\, has nevertheless yielded fresh information abou t a further late Roman Sicilian estate\, and even the name of its owners.
