Homer the founder of the European Literature
Homer’s poems are not only among the most ancient texts of western literature, but also among the most influential ones for as long as they have been used, throughout centuries down to the present, as material for creation, reflection, and education. Starting with a short glimpse on how vivid the Homeric influence continues to be today, this presentation will then look back in time to focus on the role of Homer in ancient education and in scholastic identity, as seen from the testimony of papyri. Lastly, new perspectives offered by recent digital approaches to papyrology will be explored.
