Small but busy: the metallon of Tiberiane in the mid-second century
The small metallon of Tiberiane (Barud), surveyed in 1992, is located about ten kilometers as the crow flies southeast of Mons Claudianus. The praesidium is essentially a mini Claudianus, but it did not prevent it from being well inhabited and very busy in the mid-second century. The archives of the tabularius Athenodoros (c. 150-154), an official on duty at Mons Claudianus also in charge of the administration of the satellite, provide us with much information regarding the management of Tiberiane. During this lecture, I will present some of the conclusions I reached while working on these ostraca, including the officials in charge, a description of the workforce, the water supply and the daily water consumption at Tiberiane.
