On the intersection of health, disease, and community care: How the life paths of leprosy patients unfolded in medieval England
Leprosy patients have long been believed to be ostracised and excluded from society, but recent research is showing they likely lived relatively comfortable lives both within and outside leprosaria, and had a choice in if and where they became part of such institutes. This talk will focus on how an interdisciplinary approach using osteoarchaeology, palaeopathology, historic research, dietary isotopes and aDNA of leprosy-related human remains is shining light on the varied life course available to, and lived by, leprosy patients in medieval England.
