Rare and common diseases: pathological changes in human skeletons from the Stone Age until today
Rare diseases are primarily genetically based diseases, which were also rare in history and prehistory. They are complicated to diagnose but can be found on archaeological human remains. For the first time, a bigger picture of this group emerges when using the Digital Atlas of Ancient Rare Diseases. Common diseases are often infectious or of metabolic origin and, according to the period or geographic area, they vary in frequency. Amongst others, examples of tuberculosis infection from China and metabolic diseases from Neolithic Syria will be presented. Macroscopic in combination with genetic and isotopic results provide a detailed picture of people in the past.
