The Seetal region, situated in the cantons of Aargau and Lucerne, constitutes a self-contained settlement area from a topographical perspective. Owing to its location between the water-locked region of present-day Switzerland and Lake Lucerne, it also forms a link between the Mittelland – in particular the legionary camp at Vindonissa – and Central Switzerland. Thanks to the work of the cantonal archaeological services of Aargau and Lucerne, as well as the ‘Historische Vereinigung Seetal’, a comprehensive body of sources relating to the Roman period has been compiled over the last 100 years. In addition to earlier excavations, historical reports and isolated finds, this includes excavations carried out to the highest scientific standards, as well as scientific analyses. These sources form the basis for this doctoral thesis, which aims to conduct a landscape-archaeological analysis of the Roman Seetal region. The focus is particularly on reconstructing the natural landscape, analysing settlement dynamics and investigating transport-geographical connections.
