Roman and Greek identity reflected in the imperial pottery of Eretria
The Greek city of Eretria on the island of Euboea is not unknown throughout the centuries of Greek history. However, as far as its continued existence in the Roman Imperial period is concerned, much is still uncertain. However, new excavations and recent research are increasingly giving contour to the picture of imperial Eretria.
The dissertation project is dedicated to the study of the Imperial pottery of Eretria and thus contributes significantly to the research of this period. The basis for the evaluation is formed by various excavations carried out in the area of the ancient city by Swiss and Greek archaeologists during the last decades.
Based on the ceramic finds, the everyday life of a Greek provincial city in the Roman Empire is reconstructed. Inevitably, the question of identity arises, which will be discussed on the basis of the pottery. In addition to typological-chronological studies and the analysis of the pottery in its context, the main focus is on the question of cultural exchange.
