The city of Eretria on the island of Euboea is no stranger to centuries of Greek history. However, much remains uncertain about its continued existence during the Roman Empire. New excavations and current research are increasingly bringing the image of imperial Eretria into focus.
This dissertation project is dedicated to the study of imperial ceramics from Eretria and thus makes an important contribution to research into the city's history in the first four centuries AD. The evaluation is based on excavations carried out in recent decades in the area of the ancient city by Swiss and Greek archaeologists.
Typo-chronological studies make it possible to better understand the urban development of Eretria during the Roman imperial period. In addition, the ceramics found at this site provide an important basis for comparison with other projects. Further focus is placed on Eretria's integration into imperial trade networks and on local and regional ceramic production.
