Short Portrait of the Professorship
On April 1, 2009, the Canton of Aargau and the University of Basel agreed to establish a professorship for provincial Roman archaeology for an initial period of five years. This with the aim of advancing interdisciplinary basic research by processing excavations in Roman sites in the canton of Aargau. The agreement was extended until the end of 2015 on October 30, 2012. On November 25, 2014, the parliament of the Canton of Aargau decided that it would like to be involved in the longer term.
Organizationally, the "Vindonissa Professorship for the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces" is affiliated to the Department of Ancient Civilizations and the subject European Archaeology.
In the sense of "Integrative Archaeology", the Vindonissa Professorship for the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces not only works closely with the other subjects of Studies of the Ancient World, but also with the neighboring scientific disciplines represented at the IPNA (Archaeobotany, Archaeozoology, Anthropology, Dendrology, Geoarchaeology, Palynology).
The most important partners of the Vindonissa Professorship for the Archaeology of the Roman Provinces in teaching and research are - among numerous other cooperation partners in Switzerland and abroad - the Cantonal Archaeology of Aargau and the Roman city of Augusta Raurica.
