Tracking infectious diseases through time and space with phylogenetics and phylodynamics

Vortrag von Louis du Plessis (ETH Zürich) im Rahmen des Forschungskolloquiums IPNA/UFG/PRA („Kränzli“), FS 2025.

We can use the patterns in pathogen genomes to build phylogenetic trees that represent the evolutionary history of the pathogen, allowing us to reconstruct events from long before the first cases were identified. Phylodynamic models, in turn, allow us to infer the epidemiological dynamics behind an outbreak, such as rates of spread within and between locations. While many pathogens evolve fast enough to accumulate sufficient genetic diversity over the course of an outbreak, we can also use ancient DNA data to apply the same techniques to slowly evolving pathogens over longer timescales, allowing us to uncover insights about the history of modern diseases. Using examples from different infectious diseases I show how the types of insights we can gain change as we sequence more genomes over longer periods of time.
