Je t’aime moi non plus. Umm Balad, or the tortuous relationship between archaeology and papyrology
Umm Balad is the modern name of a tiny imperial metallon situated in the southern edge of Jabal Dukkhan, the mountains in the heart of which the porphyry quarries of Porphyrites are situated. Two archaeological seasons took place at Umm Balad under the auspices of IFAO in 2002 and 2003. In spite of the large number of well-preserved ostraca found in the midden of the praesidium which controlled the quarries, it took us a long while to understand the chronology of the exploitation and the variations in the name of the metallon. The lecture will point to the factors that created misunderstandings and how the latter were progressively overcome.
