The workshop explores the potential of discard-centered approaches in archaeology and beyond. It highlights what a focus on waste regimes and discard practices reveals about social life and practices. The workshop will be structured into three sections. The first one will introduce the key concepts and theories in waste and discard studies, tracing the development of scholarly interests in waste, disposal, discard, and broader regimes or systems of valuation and wasting. Particular emphasis will be placed on the role of archaeology compared to other academic disciplines. The second section will present a specific case study from Czechia. Here, the workshop convenor and his team have conducted garbological research on household waste, combined with ethnographic research involving humans and other forms of life. This multilayered approach integrates archaeological, anthropological, and multispecies methods to demonstrate the insights that discard practices and waste can provide about social life. The third section will engage the workshop participants to explore how these discard-centered approaches can be applied to their own research. The Workshop will be held by Dr. Daniel Sosna (Czech Academy of Sciences Prague), a specialist on ethnographic and archaeological research of waste regimes. The workshop is open for PHD and MA students as well as to BA-students and participants from other universities. Registration by 25 September 2025 at ana.maspoli@clutterunibas.ch or cheyenne.peverelli@clutterunibas.ch
