Pappos aviasque trementes anteferunt nepotes': A Study of Grandparenthood in the Roman Empire

Vortrag von Lisa Brunet (Basel) im Rahmen des Kolloquiums «Zur neueren Forschung in der Alten Geschichte» im HS 2021

In a letter addressed to his grandson, fourth century poet Decimus Magnus Ausonius, encourages the young boy to study eagerly and not to fear his grim, old teacher. After all, children and elderly people often share an affectionate bond, Ausonius writes: “a child will love its nurse’s wrinkles … grandchildren when they come at last, a new anxiety, prefer doddering grandsires and granddams to their parents”. This lecture explores everyday life of the Roman family, a unit incomplete without its eldest generation, the grandparents. With Ausonius as our guide, a variety of sources are examined to discover ancient attitudes towards grandparents, central to Roman life but typically marginalized in Roman epigraphy and literature.
