Call for Applications 2025

The Chair of Latin Literature at the University of Basel, Switzerland, in collaboration with the foundation PLuS, invites applications for the fith round of the BaselFellowships in Latin Literature. The Visiting Fellowship Programme offers an opportunity for early career researchers as well as established scholars to pursue their research in the framework of a fully funded research stay of up to three months at the Department Altertumswissenschaften of the University of Basel. During their stay, Fellows are entitled to make full use of the excellent resources of the University Library as well as the departmental library, Bibliothek Altertumswissenschaften, one of the world’s leading research libraries for the study of the ancient Mediterranean cultures and Graeco-Roman literature.

Visiting Fellows are expected to present a paper on their research project, and they are invited (but not obliged) to participate in the various research colloquia and other events at the Departement Altertumswissenschaften. The Fellowship’s main objective is to offer Fellows a period of exclusive research time.

The Programme’s Scientific Board evaluates applications and appoints Fellows.

 

Stipends and allowances

Researchers appointed to the Basel Fellowship are expected to be in residence at the University of Basel for the duration of their Fellowship; they will be offered a workspace at the Departement Altertumswissenschaften and granted full access to the facilities and resources of the University Library and the Library of Departement Altertumswissenschaften. In addition, the Fellowship covers the cost of suitable accommodation, typically at the University Guest House, travel expenses of up to CHF 1000.– as well as a stipend of CHF 1500.– p/m to contribute to the general cost of living.

 

Duration

We are currently advertising Fellowships, with a duration of up to three months (minimum stay of one month), for the University of Basel’s Autumn Term 2025 or Spring Term 2026 (full term: 15 Sept – 19 Dec 2025 or 16 Feb – 29 May 2026 respectively). The starting date is flexible but the Fellowship must be in agreement with the University’s full term (overlap of at least two weeks).
Closing date for applications is 16 February 2025.

 

Eligibility

  • Excellent research project with a focus on classical Latin literature
  • Doctorate and a minimum of 3 years of post-doc research experience
  • duration of the Fellowship must overlap for at least two weeks with the University of Basel’s full term (see above)
